A ball valve is a 1/4 rotary valve that uses a spherical closure element, commonly called a ball, to start or stop the flow of fluid. The ball has a round hole or a V-notch in the center. When the bore is aligned with the pipeline, the media flows freely. A simple 90-degree rotation of the handle or actuator turns the ball, blocking the passage and shutting off the flow.

- Due to their design, ball valves are quite compact.
- Opening and closing occurs very quickly with a 90° turn.
- Ball valves with full passage can be cleaned.
- Ball valves are absolutely tight-sealing, depending on the design and material, even at high temperatures and pressures.
- With full passage, very high flow rates are possible, high Kvs value, and only slight pressure losses.

Types of Ball Valves: Designs and Configurations
Floating Ball Valves
The floating ball valve is one of the most common types of valves. It has a floating ball that seats against two seats inside the body of the valve. When open, fluid flows through an annulus between the seats and ball. They are minimized in terms of pressure drop across them due to their reduced bore design, so they can be used in cases where fluid flow efficiency is important, such as oil and gas pipelines. They have solid balls which ensure tight seals against valve seats thereby preventing valve failures even at high pressures.
Trunnion Ball Valves
For trunnion ball valves, their fixed lower stem allows them to rotate smoothly within its body. This minimizes pressure drop as well as friction during operations, hence making them effective for high pressure environments like natural gas transmission. Trunnion ball valves have a larger bore diameter, therefore offering large flow rates, thus ensuring efficient fluid controls in flanged pipeline systems using various materials and sizes.
Three-Way Ball Valves
The three-way ball valves are made of a ball which is either T-shaped or L-shaped that has multiple ports, thus enabling the flow to be controlled between different directions and also allowing flows from different sources to be mixed up. This kind of valve is widely applied in chemical processing since it needs precise control over the direction of flow and mixing for production processes optimization. The fact that they have hydraulic actuation and can also be operated using electric actuators makes them fit well within automated control systems.
Vented Ball Valves
Vented ball valves have an added vent or relief port which prevents over pressurization in systems that handle volatile fluids or gases. This construction design allows trapped particles and extra pressure to escape safely when the system is not in use for long times or during changes of temperature, thus preventing damages on various equipment. The operators can release media from trap through manual control mechanisms outside the valve, making them ideal for chemically processing sectors and food processing where system integrity matters most.
Ball valves are constructed with several crucial components:
Valve Body
This is the main part of the valve and contains all of the components for on/off control.
Rotary Ball
The ball is designed with a center bore (hole) that the media flows through. The direction of the ball is controlled by turning the stem.
Stem
This connects the ball to the external control mechanism. For example, in a manual ball valve the stem is connected to a handle or lever.
Seats
These are discs that lie in between the body and the ball. Seats provide a seal between the two and also support the ball.
Power Source
The stem of the ball valve is rotated using manual or actuated power sources. Manual actuation includes levers and handles that are controlled by an operator. Automated power sources like electric, pneumatic and hydraulic actuation are also available.
Packing
This is a seal around the stem that prevents the media from escaping.
Bonnet
The bonnet is the part of the body that contains the stem and packing.

Ball valves are available in a wide range of materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel, PVC, and various alloys.
This material diversity allows ball valves to be adapted to different media types, operating temperatures, and chemical environments. For example, stainless-steel ball valves offer excellent corrosion resistance, while PVC valves are suitable for non - corrosive liquids at lower pressures.
Customers can select the most appropriate ball valve based on their specific application needs. Whether it's handling high - temperature steam or potable water, the availability of diverse material options ensures optimal performance and compatibility, maximizing the value of the investment.
