Valves control fluid flow and regulate pressure, making them a crucial part of industrial piping systems. However, different fluid media have vastly different physical and chemical properties. Improper valve selection can easily lead to damage, leaks, and even safety accidents. Therefore, selecting the right valve based on the fluid medium is essential for pipeline design and operation.

I. Understanding the Basic Properties of the Fluid Medium

1. Temperature: High-temperature fluids require valves made of high-temperature resistant materials, such as stainless steel or alloy valves; low-temperature liquids require consideration of low-temperature brittleness.

2. Pressure: Higher fluid pressure demands higher valve strength and sealing performance.

Static Pressure: The pressure of the fluid when it is stationary in the pipe or when motion is not considered.

Dynamic Pressure: The pressure generated by the fluid's velocity during motion.

In pipeline and valve selection, static pressure is more commonly used as a design basis.

3. Corrosiveness: Acidic, alkaline, or chemical media require corrosion-resistant materials (such as 304/316 stainless steel, Hastelloy, etc.

4. Viscosity and Particles: High-viscosity fluids or fluids containing solid particles are prone to valve clogging, making valves with large openings, such as ball valves and gate valves, suitable.

II. Common Fluids and Valve Selection Suggestions

1. Clean water or low-corrosive liquids: Gate valves, butterfly valves, ball valves

Features: Generally, the working pressure is not high, and the requirements for the valve are not high. Conventional carbon steel or stainless steel materials can be used.

2. Corrosive liquids (acids, alkalis, salt water, etc.): Stainless steel valves, lined valves, Hastelloy valves

Features: Corrosion-resistant materials extend the valve's service life. Ball valves or diaphragm valves with good sealing performance can be selected to prevent leakage.

3. High-temperature steam: High-temperature ball valves, gate valves, globe valves

Features: The valve material must be high-temperature resistant, such as alloy steel or stainless steel, and ensure that the sealing rings and packing can withstand high temperatures.

4. Slurry or liquids containing particles: Knife gate valves, slurry valves

Features: The valve needs a large opening and a smooth flow path to avoid particle blockage, and high wear resistance is required. 5. Gaseous Media: Ball Valves, Globe Valves, Butterfly Valves

Features: High gas flow rate, high sealing requirements, requiring full-bore valves to ensure low leakage rates.

Valve Body Material: Carbon steel is suitable for low-corrosion environments; stainless steel is suitable for moderately corrosive environments; alloy or PTFE-lined valves are suitable for highly corrosive fluids.

Sealing Method: Metal seals are suitable for high temperature and high pressure; soft seals (such as PTFE, rubber) are suitable for low temperature and low pressure and chemically corrosive liquids.

Selecting the appropriate valve based on the fluid medium is a crucial step in industrial pipeline system design. The correct valve type, material, and sealing method can ensure the stable, safe, and efficient operation of the pipeline system. Understanding the fluid's temperature, pressure, corrosiveness, and particle content is key to making a scientific selection. The right choice will allow the valve to achieve optimal performance and service life.
